The Sudsy Science of Soapmaking
Ever wondered how soap is made?
The art of making natural cold process soap has been around for centuries, from the old Babylonian days way back in history. Natural cold process soap is made by combining natural oils or fats, such as coconut oil, olive oil, and palm oil, with a lye solution. This process is known as saponification and is what creates the soap. The resulting soap is natural, chemical-free, and can be used on both the body and face.
Making natural cold process soap is a simple process, but it does require knowledge of basic chemistry. We use a proper formulation, the correct ratio of lye to oil, as well as the correct temperature, in order to ensure that the soap will turn out correctly and produce the desired result on the skin.
Each soap can be formulated to serve different purposes and we use natural additives to benefit the skin also. We use different clays, oats, salt, activated charcoal, essential oils for scent, home-grown turmeric powder, annatto infused oils and so much more!
In our cold process soaps, once the lye solution and oils are combined, the mixture is stirred and blended until it reaches trace. This is the point at which the mixture begins to thicken. Once the trace has been reached, we add additives and the soap is poured into a mold and left to solidify for a couple hours. After which we cut the loaves into bars and let them cure for several weeks.
